GLENGARRIANS IN ENGLAND IN THE 1920'S;

A NOTE
by Royce MacGillivray

Two Glengarrians who were living in England in the 1920s have been particularly well remembered in Canada: Sir Edward Peacock and Sir Donald Macmaster. Peacock, who was born at St. Elmo in 1871, eleven years after Ralph Connor was born there, was a merchant banker, a director of the Bank of England, a financial advisor to the royal family, and the director of an impressive number of international companies. Macmaster, born at Williamstown in 1846, was nearing the end of a long and spectacularly successful life as the 1920s began. He had been MLA for Glengarry from 1879 to 1882, and MP from 1882 to 1887, while maintaining his career as one of the best known and most highly paid Canadian lawyers of his time. In 1905, at the age of 59, he moved to England to represent his Montreal law firm there. In effect, he began a new career, as a member of the English bar, and as a member of the British Parliament from 1910 to 1921.

Another Glengarrian living in England in the early 1920s was Mrs David Fraser. Born Harriet (Hattie) Cameron, and a niece of the legendary prospector Cariboo Cameron, she had married David Fraser, the son of Col. Alexander Fraser of Fraser's Point. David Fraser is one of those historical figures whose contemporary importance is hard for posterity to judge because it depended on their peculiar gifts of personality, which only the people who knew them in the flesh could share. Best remembered today as the secretary and political agent of Big Rory McLennan, he seems to have been adored by everyone who knew him. His obituary in the Glengarry News described him as "one of Glengarry's most widely known and illustrious sons." David Fraser died in 1899 at the early age of 44, leaving his widow and three children. ..........

Glengarry Archives, Williamstown, Ontario

The Glengarry Archives now have their own web site at http://www.glengarryarchives.ca

the following is from that site
Welcome To Glengarry

The Archives are located within the Manor House in the quiet, historic village of Williamstown, Ontario. Some of our records date as far back as the late 1700's. When the land registry offices changed to microfilm records in the 1990's, local history groups acquired the land record abstracts for Glengarry County. The Manor House Committee, a dedicated group of volunteers had these abstracts bound into 30 volumes (actually oversized books). The committee has worked over many years to preserve and share these and other related documents

Click here to go to the official Glengarry Archives Site http://www.glengarryarchives.ca

Enjoy

Keep up the good work

take care and God Bless

The King MacDonalds Part 2 of Glengarry County & Nova Scotia

John Sandfield MacDonald from cover of book  of same.
The King Macdonalds Part 2
John ‘KING’ MacDonell UEL ca 1740-1816

This journey started with the finding of the obituary death notice of Margaret E Kennedy who died in Feb 1905 that I came across in the Glengarry News which stated that she was a niece of John Sandfield MacDonald and both were member so the King MacDonald/ells.

Margaret Mrs John S Kennedy was indeed a member of the King MacDonalds/ells dau of Alexander son of Catherine MacDonell dau of Alex bui King MacDonald son of John King MacDonell.

Margaret was not a niece of the Sandfield MacDonald brothers  based on available present information.

Part 1 of this outline left unanswered questions which may or may not be clarified in the following updated outline.

Part 1 can be view in My MacDonalds of Loup, Lundie & Fraser line connections Version 3 under Margaret MacDonell- Mrs John S Kennedy. The article April 2011 is titled -- Is Margaret-Macdonald-Mrs-John-S-Kennedy-1841-1905-Rockland-Ontario-Actually-a-niece-of-the-Hon-John-Sandfield-MacDonald-The-King-MacDonalds-MacDonell Part1-- and  can be viewed  at    http://scr.bi/ILjtZM

In Part 2 of this outline. I hope to clarify at least in part some of the confusion surrounding the King MacDonald/ell family. The possibility does exists that there are indeed 2 such  John "KING" MacDonald/ell families based on the available information that I am aware off.

Which one does the Sandfield MacDonalds belong to is the question.

For the complete article & documentation go to The King MacDonalds Part 2, Glengarry County & Nova Scotia    http://www.scribd.com/doc/96907306
